HANDGUN FUNDAMENTALS

A comprehensive three-day course focused on safe handling, marksmanship, and manipulation of the defensive rifle.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed for individuals seeking a comprehensive foundation in handgun safety, handling, manipulations, and marksmanship. Through a blend of classroom instruction and practical range exercises, students will learn critical skills such as proper stance, grip, sight picture, sight alignment, trigger control, breath control, and follow-through.

Participants will also develop an understanding of various training methods and drills that support ongoing skill development through deliberate practice. The course begins and ends with a structured qualification, giving students measurable feedback on their progress and performance. While holster work is not covered in this class, students will leave with a solid foundation to build upon in future defensive handgun training.

  • Review of handgun safety and SDA’s standards
  • Natural point of aim and recoil management
  • Proper grip, stance, and body mechanics
  • Sight picture and alignment under live fire
  • Trigger control: prep, press, break, reset
  • Breath control and follow-through techniques
  • Clearing basic malfunctions (tap-rack and failure to fire)
  • Administrative and emergency reloads
  • Dry fire methods for home skill development
  • Timed drills, scored standards, and qualification testing

GEAR REQUIREMENTS 

To ensure safety and maximize the learning experience, all students must arrive with the following gear:

SAFETY 

  • Ballistic-rated eye protection (ANSI Z87+ or MIL-PRF standard)
  • Electronic hearing protection (no foam plugs)

WEAPON 

  • Quality, safe, semi-automatic handgun (9mm preferred)
  • Ammunition: Minimum 500 rounds of 9mm FMJ or frangible

GEAR 

  • Pistol carrying case or range bag
  • (All firearms must arrive bagged and unloaded unless active duty law enforcement.)
  • Minimum 3 magazines
  • OWB double mag carrier
  • OWB hard polymer holster (No Serpa, leather, or soft/fabric holsters allowed)
  • Sturdy gun belt capable of supporting holster and mags
  • Notepad and pen for taking notes

APPAREL 

  • Durable pants and closed-toe shoes (no shorts or sandals)
  • Tactical shoes or boots with good grip for muddy terrain
  • All-weather clothing (training continues rain or shine)

HEATH AND COMFORT 

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Hydration system or water bottles
  • Snacks or light lunch
